Surgical Instruments To Be Familiar With

Medical equipment Malaysia is the lifeblood of almost every medical treatment in the modern world, and surgery isn’t spared from such. In the field of surgery, there are certain instruments that surgeons employ to effectively carry out the respective procedures.

There are a lot of surgical instruments employed in the field, but here are some that you will commonly see or use as a surgeon yourself. No matter the names, as long as they look and function similarly as one type, the effectiveness of the tool is all the same and relies on your own expertise.

Scalpel

An icon of the surgery field, the scalpel is the knife that you will use to dissect or separate the flesh and a few layers of tissue to expose organs or even bones. The materials vary, but they tend to make the blade durable and very sharp to do the job.

There are different ways to hold a scalpel, such as one that is similar to how you would hold a pencil. You may either be guided by your peers or superiors to correctly handle your scalpel, and also observe how your colleagues effectively use them while practicing the caution of not penetrating excess flesh, such as through the tissue in case the blade might puncture some organs.

Scissors

Sometimes, scissors are also used in surgery to cut certain tissues apart during surgery. Most surgical scissors are curved and angled, though this is for dissecting scissors. Suture scissors are generally straight, so now you will know that you are not cutting through suture material with dissecting scissors unless you are ignoring this fact.

Retractors

There are two types of retractors: handheld and self-retaining.

Handheld retractors are simple instruments that you use with your hand to retract the skin or tissue to expose organs, injury, bones and so on. The blade end of the retractor comes in different angles or shapes, including hooks, teeth, curves and right angles.

Self-retaining retractor allows you to retract and leave it be without having to hold the tool with your hands. While you are doing your work, the body parts will remain exposed in the air until you stop retracting them with the tool. Designs range from simple hinged ratchet’s to complex mounted frames on the operating table.

Forceps

You cannot simply touch tissue with your hands, as though hygiene is part of the problem, a lot of them are also delicate to the touch, and you don’t want to accidentally damage them. Instead, you use forceps to interact and manipulate the inside of a patient’s body.

Dissecting forceps look like large tweezers and may be the one type that you may already be familiar with. Tooth or non-toothed, you will likely use this forceps if you are conducting your first surgery.

If you see forceps looking like a pair of scissors, you are looking at a hinged pair. Instead of blades, it has two arms that are pressed together to grip tissues. There is also a similarly designed tool called clamps, which you use to block blood vessels or other luminal tissues like bowels.

Clamps may also be used to crush tissue and specially designed to not slip off whatever it is clamping onto.
